The ABO, or American Board of Orthodontics, is the oldest and most prestigious specialty board in the field of dentistry. Founded in 1929, the ABO serves to standardize and improve the quality of orthodontic treatment by outlining methods and standards of quality for both practices and practitioners.
Importantly, the board provides certification to qualifying orthodontists based on a series of tests and evaluations. Certification takes between five and ten years to achieve, and board-certified orthodontists have to get recertified every ten years to keep the designation. About one out of every three orthodontists has achieved this distinction.
