Since braces last months to years, getting them off is certainly a reason to celebrate. This momentous appointment with an
Aurora orthodontist might be just around the corner for you, so it’s important to be prepared for your visit. Read on to discover what to expect on the day you get your braces off and what steps to take to keep teeth healthy.
Many patients are nervous about their braces removal appointment. However, the process is fairly straightforward and there are a few ways you can prepare the day of your appointment. First, consider taking an over-the-counter pain medication like ibuprofen to help mitigate any pain from the removal process. While most patients don’t experience severe pain during removal, it’s best to come prepared if the anticipation of pain is giving you anxiety.
Second, be sure to clean your braces and brush your teeth prior to your visit. Remember that you may experience some teeth sensitivity afterwards, as well. So consider investing in a toothpaste or mouthwash for sensitive teeth.
After you’ve been greeted by our friendly staff, you’ll meet with your orthodontist. They’ll run over the steps of your
braces removal procedure and aftercare instructions.
The first step in removing braces is taking out the arch-wire, then gently cracking the adhesive around the brackets with a pair of special pliers. The metal rings found along the back teeth are removed, then the remaining glue is polished off the rest of the teeth. Typically, a slight pressure is felt when the brackets are removed and your teeth may be sensitive for a few days after your braces come off.
Some staining may be present after your braces are removed, as well. The coloring of teeth highly depends on oral care during the time braces are on.
After your braces are removed, your orthodontist will fit you with a retainer. After a mold is taken of your teeth, you will receive a removable retainer that will help your teeth keep their new position for longer. It’s important to follow instructions from your orthodontist regarding your retainer since teeth can move back into their old position over time.
Retainers are made out of a thin plastic material. They require some upkeep and care, as they can bend and break if not handled or stored correctly. You should also take care to clean your retainer regularly with a soft toothbrush, antibacterial soap, and cool water. Since retainers are expensive to replace, it’s important to treat them with care and keep them in a safe place when not in use.
After braces removal, you’ll wear your clear retainer full-time for around three months. After this, you’ll check back in with your orthodontist so they can see how your teeth are progressing. If they determine your teeth are staying in alignment after braces removal, you can start wearing your retainer at night only.
